Closed Reduction versus Open Reduction and Pin Fixation in Pediatric Type III Supracondylar Humeral Fractures
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Background Supracondylar humeral fractures constitute about 60% and 13% of all pediatric elbow and pediatric skeletal fractures, respectively, with a peak incidence in the 5-7 years age group. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare closed reduction with open reduction and pin fixation in type III supracondylar humeral fractures in children younger than 12 years. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, all children under 12 years of age with type III supracondylar humeral fractures who referred to two teaching hospitals in Mashhad, Iran, between March 2017 and March 2019 were included. Patients were divided into two groups: open reduction and fixation with pin (OR) (n= 30), and closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CR) (n=15). The method of surgery for each individual patient was chosen based on the surgeon’s preference. For patients who had a follow-up of at least 6 months, subsequent elbow radiographs were requested. Results: No significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of range of motion of the fractured limb and radiographic angles at follow-up (p > 0.05). However, operation time was significantly shorter in the CR group compared with the OR group (p < 0.001). Three patients (6%) had cubitus valgus (all of whom were in the OR group [10%]), and two patients (4%) had cubitus varus (one patient in the OR group [3.33%] and the other in the CR group [5%]). Wound dehiscence was only seen in one patient in the OR group (3.33%). Conclusion Based on the results, there was no significant difference between the open and closed reduction methods in type III supracondylar humeral fractures with respect to elbow function and union of the fracture.

Outcome of Closed and Open Reduction with Cross Pinning Fixation, for Displaced Supracondylar Humeral Fracture
ABSTRACT Introduction: In areas where intraoperative radiography facilities are not available, open reduction is an acceptable treatment option for fracture treatment. The aim of this investigation was to compare the outcomes of closed reduction to open reduction with cross-pinning fixation in Gartland Type III supracondylar humeral fracture extensions. Methods: In this retrospective study, clo...
متن کاملResults of type-III supracondylar fracture humerus with open reduction and internal fixation in children after failed closed reduction.
BACKGROUND Supracondylar fracture of humerus is the second most common fracture in children which account for 60-75% of all fractures around the elbow. There are various treatment modalities for type-III fracture, i.e., closed reduction and casting, skeletal traction, close reduction and percutaneous pinning and open reduction and internal fixation. This study was conducted to see the outcome o...

PURPOSE To assess results of closed reduction and external fixation for displaced proximal humeral fractures. METHODS 18 men and 2 women aged 18 to 60 (mean, 38) years underwent closed reduction and external fixation using a standard AO fixator for displaced fractures of the proximal humerus. Injury mechanisms were road traffic accident (n=15) and fall from a height (n=5). 15 were 2-part frac...

ABSTRACT Type III supracondylar fractures of humerus is a common fracture of children with high rate of complications. There is many contraversies about its treatment. Closed reduction and percutaneous pin fixation and also open reduction and internal fixation are two routine surgical methods for this fracture each with own risk and benefits. This is a retrospective study on 49 patient...
متن کاملThe Best Option in Treatment of Modified Mason Type III Radial Head Fractures: Open Reduction and Internal Fixation Versus Radial Head Excision
Background: Radial head fractures commonly occur during elbow traumas. Among those, treatment of Mason type IIIfractures is still under controversy. Common treatment methods for these fractures include open reduction and internalfixation (ORIF) as well as radial head excision. In this study, we compared long-term outcomes of both methods intreatment of patients with Mason type III fractures of ...
